Venturer Bushcraft Day- Saturday 20th February 2010

The Truth Seeking Ventures went on a bushcraft day during half term. The day started at Buckland Community Centre and a drive to Shedfield. From there we walked to Lyons Copse Scout camp site. Once there we set about lighting a fire for hot water and food. Once we got the fire going it was time to for a bit of knife work.

We gathered some dead hazel branches and cut them to size. After a safety talk and a demonstration we set about whittling some letter openers. Some of the Venturers had done some knife work before so were straight into it but the others took their time. They all did some good work, including one of the leaders who was whittling for the first time.

Once the knives were safely packed away it was time for a couple of wide games. Firstly, the leaders hunting the Venturers then the leaders being hunted. We finished with a bit of a treasure hunt. Once the treasure (Coop Fair Trade Chocolate) had been eaten it was time to tidy the site and leave it as if we were never there. Then it was a half hour walk back to the mini bus via the the public foot path through the golf couse- which included a lesson on golfing etiquette. Aparently, walking and talking on such footpaths is ont the done thing!!
