Venturer Bushcraft Day- Saturday 20th February 2010

The Truth Seeking Ventures went on a bushcraft day during half term. The day started at Buckland Community Centre and a drive to Shedfield. From there we walked to Lyons Copse Scout camp site. Once there we set about lighting a fire for hot water and food. Once we got the fire going it was time to for a bit of knife work.

We gathered some dead hazel branches and cut them to size. After a safety talk and a demonstration we set about whittling some letter openers. Some of the Venturers had done some knife work before so were straight into it but the others took their time. They all did some good work, including one of the leaders who was whittling for the first time.

Once the knives were safely packed away it was time for a couple of wide games. Firstly, the leaders hunting the Venturers then the leaders being hunted. We finished with a bit of a treasure hunt. Once the treasure (Coop Fair Trade Chocolate) had been eaten it was time to tidy the site and leave it as if we were never there. Then it was a half hour walk back to the mini bus via the the public foot path through the golf couse- which included a lesson on golfing etiquette. Aparently, walking and talking on such footpaths is ont the done thing!!

Elfin and Pioneer half term outing- Thursday 18th February 2010.

The Elfin and Pioneer groups had a winter walk during the February half term. We went to Havant Thicket and then Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill. The day started at Buckland Community Centre and as the weather was showery the young people were asked to decide democratically where they wanted to go- for the planned walk or to a museum. The decision was to give the walk in the woods a try. Although it was wet underfoot when we arrived at Havant Thicket the rain had stopped so we started our walk.

Played the ‘snorting game’.

After a short walk we stopped to get into groups and have a snack. We got into groups by playing the snorting game. Basically, one of the leaders had a tissue for each group member and half of them were soaked in one scent (orange) and the other half had a different scent. The tissues were then pegged to a branch randomly, and then each young person and leader had to choose a tissue, small it and then find the others with the same smelling tissue. Then everyone had to remember which group they were in. Afterwards it was time to make blobsters.

Making ‘Blobsters’.

Before making blobsters we got together in a circle and listened to the story of Muma Africa. After the story each young person was given a piece of clay to make a blobster with. They got their pieces of clay and started making animal shapes and then added all different things from the woodland floor to complete their blobster, such as twigs, seed pods, seeds, stones, small pine cones etc. When they were finished each young person told the group about their blobster and then most found an ideal spot for them to live in. As we were finishing the blobsters the rain started so after we set off for the minibus where we had our lunch.

Visit to Fort Nelson.

After lunch we went to Fort Nelson which is on Portsdown Hill. At the fort we went though the tunnels and explored the numerous underground rooms. We also walked around the battlements. We looked for the ghosts that dwell within the walls but found none. All the young people had a go on the mini-assault course before we left.

Honoured guest coming to group night

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and the Lord Mayor’s Consort, Councillor Mrs Terry Hall and Mr John Hall will be visiting Portsmouth Woodcraft Folk on Tuesday 2nd March 2010. After supporting Portsmouth Woodcraft Folk with funding for the coach to and from summer camp The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councillor Mrs Terry Hall requested a visit as she has always supported “the principles of the Woodcraft Folk ethos”. We are really pleased to host a visit from the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and hope to see representatives from each of our groups at group night on the 2nd.
Report from summer camp 2009.

Portsmouth Woodcraft Folk held their first summer camp since the present committee starting running the district in early 2007. The camp went extremely well with a great venue and some exciting activities some organised by the camp committee and others arranged through the venue management.

The camp was held at the Cricket Campsite- run by the Itchen South District Scouts- between the 15th and 22nd August 2009. The on site activities the children and young people got to go on included Kayaking, Wall Climbing, Abseiling, Archery and Grass Sledging.

We also organised a number of activities. We did a number of art and craft activities including making clan posters that were hung up in the marquee. We also played games including a wide game where the young people had to gather food and water (provided by mother nature, Jenny) for the two endangered animals (Donna) roaming the site and when the animals got sick there was medicine to gather for them. The adults and young people really enjoyed this and some dressed for the part!! We had a great session of parachute games where the young people got to walk on the parachute and finishing with washing machine.

Night activities

For the older group we organised some night games such as spot light and a version of manhunt. We also had a night of challenges for them which had everyone cheering on their team mates and laughing with them too. The young people enjoy the night activities so much they kept asking “what games we would be playing tonight?” We also had a number of camp fires with some great action songs.

We held a pea fare. The young people created some stalls for others to have a go on such as beat the goal keeper, skittle ally and bubble painting. Other made things such as clay pots, pictures and friendship bands to sale at the pea fare. The currency for the stalls was dried peas. The pea fare finished with a show from the great mysterio!!

The week finished with a special camp fire. For those moving up to the next age group we held a ceremony where they jumped the stick. We also had a camp fire show where the young people who had prepared ‘skits’ got to perform them. There were some great skits including the great mysterio singing with Sion on guitar, Finley hypnotising the whole group with other singing and drama skits.

Clans are the small groups that we split into to for cooking, tidying up, getting wood for the camp fire and water for cooking washing up etc. The clan is formed using adults and young people with all clans having a mixture of the age range and the group decide the clan’s name. This year the names were wild animals that included the 5 Golden Eagles.
